Dean of Economics Department of MSU: ‘Ruben Vardanyan is a graduate who makes us proud’

In his interview to Sofiko Shevardnadze, Alexander Auzan, Doctor of Economic Sciences and Dean of the Economics Department of Moscow State University, called philanthropist Ruben Vardanyan a graduate who makes the university very proud.

“He [Vardanyan] launched a plethora of social and charitable projects. Let me share a story he once told himself. When his photo appeared on the cover of Forbes magazine, he and his wife [Veronika Zonabend] decided it was time to talk to their son, who was 14 years old at the time. Sitting in front of him, they said, ‘You know, we won’t leave you this money. There are so many projects that need to be carried out. We will spend our money there.’ This, to which their son cleverly replied, ‘I get it. Just don’t leave me with any debts’,” Alexander Auzan said.

Artsakh photographer tells the story behind photo of Ruben Vardanyan

David Kagramanyan recalls how he photographed social entrepreneur Ruben Vardanyan, who was working in the destroyed monastery complex of Hakobavank. The philanthropist considered the restoration of this holy place a symbol of revival in Artsakh.

“[Over 9 months] we did not manage to complete the restoration, we only finished the initial clearing, in which Vardanyan participated personally — he helped clean the territory with his own hands. I only distributed this particular photo; I keep the rest because he was very sweaty in the pictures. He worked harder than the workers, and this sweat, visibly apparent, is extremely telling. He was equal with everyone, he not only gave us advice, but asked us for advice as well; young people associated so many hopes with him,” Kagramanyan said.

Five months in captivity: a chronicle of Ruben Vardanyan's detention

On September 27, 2023, Azerbaijani forces detained social entrepreneur and philanthropist Ruben Vardanyan when he tried to leave Artsakh for Armenia. His illegal arrest triggered a worldwide public outcry. More than 150 days have passed since the philanthropist was detained. During this time, many politicians, cultural figures and representatives of international NPOs spoke out in support of Ruben Vardanyan.

The Armenian political party Country of Living roundly condemned the social entrepreneur’s illegal arrest. Members of the party called on the authorities of different countries to facilitate the Armenian prisoners’ release.

TThe ANIV Foundation for Development and Support of Armenian Studies joined the voices in defense of Ruben Vardanyan. In its open letter, the organization stated that his arrest was completely illegal and politically motivated.

The international community, similarly, did not ignore the arrest. In the United States, the County of Los Angeles Board of Supervisors called on the Biden administration to facilitate the release of Ruben Vardanyan and other Armenian captives. Its members urged the introduction of sanctions against Azerbaijan and the cessation of assistance to Ilham Aliyev’s regime.

The French Senate also demanded that the government resort to pressure, by means of sanctions, on Baku. Among other things, the authors of the resolution condemned the illegal arrest of Ruben Vardanyan and other political leaders of Artsakh. Golos Armenii praised the support provided by the upper house of the French parliament.

Despite all this, at the end of January it became clear that Ruben Vardanyan would remain in custody. The court in Baku extended his illegal detention for another four months.

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan stated that the future of the Armenian prisoners is constantly being discussed in negotiations with Azerbaijan. The head of state promised that, if necessary, Yerevan will seek the release of Ruben Vardanyan and other Artsakh officials in the UN International Court of Justice.

Commissioner for Human Rights of Artsakh Gegham Stepanyan stated that releasing Ruben Vardanyan and his former colleagues is impossible without the international community’s participation. According to him, political pressure on Baku is necessary to achieve the prisoners’ immediate release.

The members of the International Committee of the Red Cross again visited the Armenian prisoners, including Ruben Vardanyan. With their help, the prisoners were able to communicate with their families. According to the ICRC’s later estimates, the former Artsakh leaders contacted their close ones 660 times in 2023.

Despite the fact that the social entrepreneur is held in a Baku prison, his humanitarian projects continue to work.

The “We Are Our Mountains” agency, co-founded by Ruben Vardanyan, donated gift certificates to those forcibly displaced from Artsakh. More than 50 Artsakh families were able to use them to purchase household necessities.

Moreover, the agency continues to help the former Artsakh residents who want to improve their skills or learn a new profession. In mid-January, the second stage of the educational project “Support for Artsakh Craftsmen” was launched. 80 forcibly displaced persons have been selected for the program; almost 30 of them will undergo special training courses.

The children’s football academy Impulse, located in Dilijan, celebrated its first anniversary. The school for young football players was in part founded by Ruben Vardanyan. The school trained more than 200 children over the year.

Artsakh ombudsman: ‘The release of Armenian prisoners is impossible without the participation of the international community’

To successfully release social entrepreneur Ruben Vardanyan and other Artsakh officials from Azerbaijani captivity, it is necessary that the international community put political pressure on Baku, stated the Artsakh Commissioner for Human Rights Gegham Stepanyan.

“Without concrete political pressure on Azerbaijan from the United States together with the international community, it is impossible to ensure the immediate release of these people in accordance with international law. Unfortunately, judicial actions and other legal measures are ineffectual in this matter,” Stepanyan said.

Paul Polman, Vice-Chair of the UN Global Compact

“President Ilham Aliyev could initiate a series of reforms, bringing his country closer to international human rights standards. He could begin by heeding to international calls to release Armenian political prisoners currently being illegally detained, the most well-known being prominent businessman and humanitarian Ruben Vardanyan. President Aliyev would earn the respect and goodwill of the international community, and help Azerbaijan gain a greater status on the world stage, a goal it is desperate to reach.”

Komsomolskaya Pravda has studied the changes in Russian education that have taken place over the last 20 years. According to journalists, in recent years, the state has been striving to increase its graduates’ competitiveness and to focus education on the real needs of the economy. For this reason, major businesses are increasingly cooperating with higher educational facilities.

The authors of the article note that back in the mid-nineties, large companies did not pursue a responsible approach to education. But then philanthropist Ruben Vardanyan took on training qualified entrepreneurs of a new type. In 2006, he and his partners launched the Skolkovo School of Management, bringing together founders of major companies and sponsors from important sectors of the economy. Human rights defender: ‘Sanctions against Baku will help free Armenian prisoners’

Human rights defender Siranush Sahakyan spoke about the reasons behind the decision, made by Azerbaijani authorities, to extend the illegal arrest of social entrepreneur Ruben Vardanyan and other Artsakh ex-leaders. In her opinion, it is connected with the need to buy some time in order to create fakes, “as the cases are devoid of facts and evidence.”

Anna Oganesyan

Вам и Вашей семье сейчас очень нелегко (that’s a huge understatement).
