This year the college graduated 109 students from 50 countries. At the graduation ceremony, the name of UWC Dilijan co-founder Ruben Vardanyan was repeatedly mentioned with gratitude. Among others, Nubar Afeyan, an honorary member of the UWC Dilijan Board of Trustees, recalled the philanthropist, who is illegally held by Azerbaijan. He compared Ruben to Christ, who appeared in a vision to the apostle Peter as he fled Rome.
“We know what my friend and colleague Ruben has gone through over the past year, and nothing symbolizes “returning to Rome to face crucifixion” as much as Ruben’s trip to Artsakh”, Nubar Afeyan stressed.
Veronica Zonabend, Co-Founder and President of the Board of Trustees of UWC Dilijan, noted that each of the college students takes a piece of Armenian culture with them into adulthood: “I can assure you that from now on you will see the Armenian trace everywhere around you, you will notice what you did not notice before. Also, for the rest of your life, just like me, you will be an armenian by choice”.
Veronica Zonabend concluded her speech with the words of her husband Ruben Vardanyan: “I am sure that together we can do a lot to make the world a better place for everyone. Stay true to your values and be ready to give more than you will ever be able to receive in return.
In May, staff of the International Committee of the Red Cross again visited Ruben Vardanyan and other former leaders of Artsakh who are being held illegally by Azerbaijan.
“One-on-one meetings were held with detainees and arrangements were made for them to contact their families. According to its mandate, during its visits the ICRC assesses the treatment of detainees, the conditions of their detention and creates an opportunity to restore or continue communication with their families,” said Ilaha Huseynova, head of the public relations department of the ICRC’s office in Azerbaijan.

Today, the Azerbaijani court again extended the illegal arrest of Ruben Vardanyan. His team believes this decision to be illegal and unjustified. The representative of Ruben’s defense in Russia, Victoria Burkovskaya, reminded that the social entrepreneur has been in custody for more than seven months, although his guilt has not been proven by the court.
“Every time a petition is filed with the court to extend Ruben Vardanyan’s detention, the investigator indicates that he has not had time to complete the investigation of the criminal case and what exactly he intends to do in the coming months. However, the answers are usually formal. The same general words are repeated. At the same time, the person whose guilt has not been proven by the court continues to remain behind bars.
Now we do not understand clearly when the court hearing will take place. According to the Code of Criminal Procedure, the court may be scheduled in another 6-9 months. By that point, Ruben Vardanyan will have been in custody for over a year. The prolongation of the preliminary investigation with the detention of the defendant in the pre-trial detention facility violates the rights of our defendant.
In addition, it is not clear to us whether the court will be public. Meanwhile, the open court hearing of our client’s case is the only way to ensure the legality of criminal proceedings. We insist that Ruben Vardanyan’s trial must be exactly like this,” said Victoria Burkovskaya.
The UN Committee against torture has expressed alarm over reports of ill-treatment of Armenian prisoners by Azerbaijan. The Committee is also concerned about the more than six-month detention of 23 Armenians whom Baku accuses of terrorism. Eight former leaders of Artsakh, including social entrepreneur Ruben Vardanian, still remain in Azerbaijani prisons.
In his open letter to the participants and laureates of the Aurora International Humanitarian Award 2024, Ruben Vardanian confessed that he was inspired to move to Artsakh by the heroes of Aurora – the heroes who risked themselves to save others. According to the social entrepreneur, despite the illegal imprisonment, he does not regret his choice at all and is grateful to them for the example they set.
“Unfortunately, despite your efforts, the world is not a kinder place, but that just goes to show that your cause is more important and needed than ever. Your determination to help others and our shared mission gives me strength. Never before have I been so convinced that values and principles are more important than anything else in the world, even life itself,” said Ruben Vardanian in the letter read by his wife Veronica Zonabend.

Famous journalist and writer Sergey Bablumyan in his column about Ruben Vardanyan’s personality and humanitarian projects reminded that the philanthropist risked his own safety, health and even life when he moved to Artsakh. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation commented on the actions taken for the release of Ruben Vardanyan and other Armenians illegally detained by Azerbaijan. According to the representatives of the Ministry, such a phrasing of the issue is not quite correct.
“We confirm our position in favor of the exchange and transfer of war prisoners and detainees according to the formula “all for all”, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation said.

On September 27, 2023, Azerbaijani authorities illegally detained social entrepreneur Ruben Vardanyan in the Lachin corridor while he was trying to leave Artsakh for Armenia. The prominent philanthropist has been held in the Baku prison for seven months. His arrest has triggered a wide-scale response around the world, with new people and organizations constantly joining the campaign in support of his release.
In April, Ruben Vardanyan was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for his charitable activities and prevention of a humanitarian disaster in Artsakh. The philanthropist was nominated by an initiative group of organizations and individuals, including winners of the prize.
Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Armenia to Germany Ashot Voskanyan shared his thoughts in regards to Ruben’s Nomination. He noted that he had been pleased with the news for two reasons. Firstly, the philanthropist deserved the most prestigious international award with all he had done, and, secondly, his nomination became another opportunity to remember the Armenian captives being kept in Baku.
President of Artsakh Samvel Shahramanyan asked French authorities to put pressure on Azerbaijan to release Ruben Vardanyan and other Armenian political prisoners. In an interview to Le Figaro, he reminded that eight former Artsakh leaders still remained behind bars in Baku.
The philanthropist’s future was also addressed during a discussion at the American University of Armenia, where the representative of the prisoners of war in the European Court of Human Rights, Siranush Sahakyan, spoke. Responding to the question about whether Ruben Vardanyan can be called a prisoner of war, she noted that it would be more correct to consider him a political prisoner.
Elisa Von Joeden-Forgey, Executive Director of the Lemkin Institute for Genocide Prevention, also pointed out the political motives behind the social entrepreneur’s arrest. In her opinion, Ruben Vardanyan fell victim to persecution by the Azerbaijani authorities because of his bold and open stance on Artsakh independence.
The news that Ruben Vardanyan had gone on a hunger strike came as a true shock. Due to a lack of regular telephone communication, his family found out only two weeks after he had begun the strike. The philanthropist took this desperate step after Baku ignored repeated requests to ensure a fair and transparent trial in accordance with global legal standards.
On April 24, a Remembrance Day dedicated to victims of the 1915 tragedy, a memorial service was held at the Armenian Temple Complex in Moscow for the holy martyrs of the Armenian Genocide. Prayers were also offered for the release of the illegally arrested compatriots, including Ruben Vardanyan.
Despite the fact that Ruben Vardanyan remains in prison, his charitable initiatives continue to help people. The territorial development agency We are Our Mountains, established by Vardanyan, is creating a new orchard near the Tatev Monastery. The project involves the philanthropist’s partners and associates, as well as numerous volunteers.
In April, representatives of the International Committee of the Red Cross finally visited Ruben Vardanyan and other Armenian prisoners again. The ICRC members met with the detainees one-on-one and ensured that the latter could communicate with their families.
On April 24, Armenian Genocide Remembrance Day, a memorial service for the martyrs was held at the Armenian Temple Complex in Moscow. Those participating also prayed for the release of their illegally arrested compatriots. On the same day, a photo exhibition opened in the temple complex museum.
The exhibition is centered around photographs of the imprisoned leaders of Artsakh, including Ruben Vardanyan. His photo is accompanied with a quote: “Values and principles are more important than anything, even life itself.” The social entrepreneur said these words to his family after declaring a hunger strike.
On April 24, a prayer service will be held at the Armenian Temple Complex in Moscow for the release of all illegally detained Armenians.
The service will start at 10:30 a.m. It will be followed by a ceremony honoring the holy martyrs by placing flowers at the memorial dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide in the Ottoman Empire.
Afterwards, all participants will be invited to visit the Tapan Museum.
